Stocks on the country’s premier bourse gained in value on Tuesday shrugging off previous day’s downtrend.

The DGEN, the gauge of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, gained 114 points to reach 5,214 at the closing of the day’s trading.

Of the issues traded, prices of 220 issues advanced, 31 declined, while eight remained unchanged.

Total 1,91,025 issues were traded and Tk 929.43 crore changed hands.

On Monday, the index dipped 7 points to close at 5,099 points.

The suspect, Harold Waller, 45, was arrested on Thursday afternoon at Sacramento International Airport after Transportation Security Administration officers at a checkpoint found a firearm inside a carry-on bag, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Further checks showed Waller was carrying a loaded handgun and had three loaded firearms in his carry-on bags, it said.Sheriff’s deputies searched his car at an off-site parking lot and turned up eight more firearms, several of them loaded.

Assistant director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department Shamsuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the 4.6-maginitude tremor shook buildings in the capital Dhaka at 8:56 am and lasted 10 seconds.No casualties were reported immediately but many residents said they ran for safety.

According to initial reports, the tremor was felt in Uttara, Mohakhali, Rampura and Mirpur.Meanwhile, Dhaka University Earth Observatory Centre professor Syed Humayun Akhter said the tremor was felt at 8.55am and it was of 4.2-magnitude.

According to professor Humayun, the epicentre of the quake was to the south of the capital and within a 30-kilometre radius.But Ahmed contradicted as he said the epicentre was around 21 kilometres south-west of Dhaka.Professor Humayun said a 4-magnitude quake jolted Dhaka last time on Dec 19, 2000.

The service took place on Sunday at Lees Street Congregational Church in the Openshaw area, where Jones performed as a child in church plays.

Jones’ wife and daughters travelled to join his British-based relatives after his funeral in Florida last week.His niece Beverley Barber said: “We had a beautiful service, and a wonderful celebration of his life, as a family.”

The actor and singer died from a heart attack at the end of February at his home in Florida. He moved from Manchester to the US in the mid-1960s.

Mrs Barber said the family wanted the service to be private, but added that a public event could be staged in the US or UK in the future.

“We needed a little bit of time on our own,” she said. “From a family perspective we’ve said our goodbye.

“We managed to keep it very private and very personal. All his family together in one room. He’d have been thrilled to bits to see that.”

Jones’ wife Jessica took his ashes to Manchester, Mrs Barber added.

“He came home to Manchester,” she said. “His ashes weren’t scattered in Manchester although they were placed on his parents’ grave for a little while.”

Baby

A doctor was having an affair with his nurse. Shortly afterward, she told him that she was pregnant. Not wanting his wife to know, he gave the nurse a sum of money and asked her to go to Italy and have the baby there.

“But how will I let you know the baby is born?” she asked.

He replied, “Just send me a postcard and write “spaghetti” on the back. I’ll take care of expenses.” Not knowing what else to do, the nurse took the money and flew to Italy.

Six months went by, and then one day the doctor’s wife called him at the office and said, “Dear, you received a very strange postcard in the mail today from Europe, and I don’t understand what it means.”

The doctor said, “Just wait until I get home and I will explain it to you.”

Later that evening the doctor came home, read the postcard, and fell to the floor with a heart attack. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital emergency room. The head medic stayed back to comfort the wife. He asked what trauma had precipitated the cardiac arrest.

So the wife picked up the card and read: “Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti – Two with sausage and meatballs; two without.”
